Editorial policy
Horn & Hickory prepares reading editions of American primary sources from identified public-domain texts. Each book page identifies the source basis, editorial changes, contributors, and retailer formats.
Source basis
The source basis names the edition used to prepare the reading text. Editors compare available scans or physical copies and record which source governs the restored text.
Text restoration
Scanning errors, broken type, and clear typesetting defects may be corrected. The author's vocabulary, argument, chapter order, and historical usage remain visible. Contextual notes identify people, places, obsolete references, or editorial decisions without rewriting the source.
Credits and responsibility
Book pages credit authors, editors, translators, and narrators by role. Horn & Hickory and American Source Editions are responsible for the modern edition.
Corrections
Correction reports should name the title, location, issue, and supporting source when available. A substantive correction is recorded with the date of the revised edition.
